When the Image is Everything

Welcome to the studio’s online presence.  We invite you to to take this opportunity to get to know a little more about Behm Photographics, who we are and what we’re about.  Feel free, as well, to visit our galleries at Wedding Gallery or Portraits

See links to more of our work under the Pages heading.

The studio was started in New Wilmington, PA in 1984 with an emphasis on technical expertise and creative images for many different uses, including many advertisers from the area as well as weddings, portraits and high school seniors, corporate and theatrical head shots, musicians and many other types of photography.

It’s obvious, if you’ve looked around, that you have many photographers in the area from which to choose. A fact that you may find interesting is this: three of the studios in this region are actually my former assistants or students.

Among the things that make Behm Photographics special is our ability to create storytelling photography coupled with imaginative imagery made with exacting attention to detail after  years of study.  It is for these reasons that such clients as Wendell August Forge, Dallas Hartman, Werner Ladders, Korbel Champaign, Gorant Candies and many others have come to us for their commercial photography.  This work has taken us all over the world.

Why should this matter to you - a bride or family seeking a photographer?

Because it is this very attention to detail that we bring to your needs, and that makes us so desirable for important social events like weddings that we have been the wedding photographers for events from Edinburgh, Scotland to Texas, Connecticut, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland.   We routinely serve the Cleveland - Warren - Youngstown to Butler - Pittsburgh markets and everything in between.  Excellent photography is our hallmark.

Quite literally, to paraphrase “Paladin”, an old TV show, “Have Camera, Will Travel”.

About the Photographer

I grew up in a family of gifted artists working in the more traditional media - painting, pottery, sculpting - for which I never demonstrated much talent.  Pursuing music as an early career, I was exposed to the magic of stage lighting and how light can attract or repel the eye of the viewer.  In there somewhere, I also discovered the hobby of photography.

What started as a hobby became an obsession, changing my career and the course of  what I’d thought my life would become.  Now, as a professional photographer for the past 25 years, the creation of images for the use of others is a part of everyday life.

My clients run the gamut from local brides and portraits to international weddings in Europe;  advertising photography for Anderson Coach & Tour to Snark Sailboats to Joy Cones; from Subway Sandwiches to Universal Rundle to Zambelli Fireworks.  The work has taken me throughout North America as well as the United Kingdom and has been published in TIME, Cheers, Appalachia, Pittsburgh Magazine, and Wedding Flowers International.

While paid commissions have been able to feed the creative passion,
work for my own satisfaction had been given little attention until
recently.  That’s when a friend and gallery curator asked to see some
of the personal images, leading to shows in Sharon, PA., Warren, OH.,
Monmouth, IL., and Burlington, VT.

Out of this additional direction has come a new and rewarding aspect to
my career: teacher.  While it’s always been part of my practice to take
on college interns and pass along photographic techniques, this
association with galleries has lead to teaching assignments in both
Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Is this the year of your wedding?

First things first, our heartfelt congratulations!  Other than getting born ourselves and giving birth to our own children, this is arguably the most important day in any of our lives. If you’re not nervous, and are completely confident, wonderful!  It’s the best of all places emotionally.

But if you’re nervous or anxious going forward, who can blame you?  It’s huge, and you’ve agreed to take part!  You can be forgiven for having moments when you wonder, “What was I thinking?”

No matter which of those best describes you, we want you to know that at Behm Photographics, we understand.  We’ve been around long enough to know what’s happening, and we’re approaching 500 weddings photographed – from the United Kingdom to Houston, TX. and from Connecticut to Cleveland.  So, while our business is to create the ultimate in beautiful photographic interpretations of your wedding day, we are also firmly grounded in the concerns and realities of weddings, and want to be as helpful as we can be.

Located in quaint New Wilmington, PA, Lawrence County, we are perfectly situated between New Castle and Sharon, PA.  and within 60-90 minutes of both Pittsburgh and Cleveland.  We love what we do, and it shows in our photographs of brides, couples and the events of your big day.

So how can we best help you?  By drawing upon what we’ve learned in nearly 500 weddings and passing it on to you so you can make your decisions based on the real life experience of someone who will be there with you throughout the day.

Here’s a very simple idea from our planning literature that goes a long way:

It is very important that your Bridal Party and families on both sides know what is expected of them on this day.  This day will be exhausting for all concerned and people who do not understand what you are doing will be less helpful than those who do understand.  Remember, this is probably the most important day in your life.  The members of your Bridal Party are there to help you.  It is an honor to be included.   It is also important to consider things like bachelor/bachelorette parties.  Since this is an exhausting day, a hangover will not make it better.  Since it is probable that you are spending a great deal of money this day, do your best to let everyone in your group know that the things you have planned are exactly how you want them, and you are counting on their enthusiasm and cooperation.  It will show in your portraits.

It’s a fact of human behavior that our expectations of an event are based upon our past experience.  Now, what happens if the people in our wedding have different expectations of what is happening and when?  Will they, like many people, dig in their heels at the sudden change from their expectations?  Will that affect their cooperation?  While people are different, we have seen it have a negative impact and want to give you the opportunity to avoid this problem.

Living History – the value of a family portrait

When we visit any museum that has even a modest collection of paintings, we expect to see fine portraits of families or family members that used to hang in beautiful homes as testament to the love and affection they had for each other.  Over the years, those became the treasured heirlooms and remembrances of the family throughout time.

With the advent of photography, paintings have, in many cases, been replaced by fine photographs, but their value as family heirlooms and remembrances of those we love remains unchanged.

Comp

Among the traits necessary for a portrait to become a timeless reminder is that it not submit to fleeting fads or trends that will make it an embarrassment in just a few years.  While there is certainly a place for avant guard work, simply because it’s fun and different, true family classics are often of a more formal nature.  Frankly, in this digital age, not every photographer even knows how to orchestrate, light and pose a formal session, something we at Behm Photographics know well, and are pleased to to create for you.

The accompanying family portraits are from a session over Christmas Holiday when people just naturally gather together, just as they do at Easter, Mother’s Day and the summer vacations.

Let your next family gathering be commemorated by your own priceless heirloom.  Call us today at 724-730-8513 or email info@behmphoto.com to discuss your needs.

Thinking About Photography

When we photographers go into commercial or advertising photography, it’s usually with the understanding that very few people will associate our name with the work we produce.  Even though it’s often widely circulated, it’s not signed or identified in the usual ways. The point is to make sure the ad agencies and art directors know. Thus, we have agents or reps to keep our name out there while we plan, produce and eventually shoot the assignments they generate.

There’s often a great deal of time and effort that goes into this work as well.  Some of it dangerous, most of it interesting – some of it very interesting.

For about  a dozen years, I’ve been producing the advertising campaign photos for a well known attorney in our area.  The art director usually has a pretty precise idea of what he wishes to accomplish, as I’ll describe below.

Anatomy of a Shoot.  They don’t just “happen”.

In early 2008, we were asked to create new billboard images for Attorney Dallas W. Hartman.  We’ve been creating different images for Mr. Hartman’s still photo ads for quite a few years now, and they are always shot to an exacting standard.  Since these were specifically designed for use in a 2:1 aspect ratio, that was part of the planning, too.

Following a phone call from Dave Dobish of PeterDavid Communications asking us to plan for a new shoot, we received a mock up of the concept and were asked to meet for a discussion about applying it to Mr. Hartman.  During this discussion we talked most about a location involving a library as background, as well as our suggestions that we reverse which leg would be crossed, and the use of a semi-wide angle lens to replicate the exaggerated foreground elements seen in the mock up.  The purpose behind reversing the leg was two-fold: it would read better as a compositional element, and it would enhance the comfort level for our subject.

Hartman sketch

As we considered locations, it occurred to me that an acquaintance was retired from his law practice, and if memory served properly, had a large library in his lobby if the new tenants hadn’t removed it.  Once it was established that it still existed and we could use it, we had to determine whether the space would be sufficient to create the set necessary.  To that end, we visited the location and determined that it was large enough and available to us on the day we required in order to meet the publications deadlines for the billboards.  This involved the making of scouting photographs for planning.

scout 1

Once the location had been scouted and evaluations of the space taken place, we had to deal with the unexpected fact that there were cabinets we wished to de-emphasize, as they created a distracting compositional element.  It was determined that a riser of sorts would be necessary.  It’s use would enhance the slightly upward view of a seated man that’s evident in the mock up, and raising the chair as high as was safe (who wants to create an opportunity for an attorney to take a fall, right?) would diminish the cabinets under the books.

We had obtained permission from the tenants of the building to commandeer their lobby for an extra day in order to deliver and construct the riser, since the time available to us on the day of the shoot was limited by the client.  Lighting the set would have to take place early in the morning out of safety concerns for the lobby’s users.

Two days before the shoot we discovered that the chair for the set had become an issue, so began a mad dash for a suitable replacement.  We looked in several furniture stores in our Pennsylvania/Ohio border vicinity without success.  The only chair remotely under consideration was in a local store whose owner was out of state until the day before we needed it, and a certain amount of desperation was creeping in.

In a moment of divine intervention, it suddenly occurred to me that I knew a private individual who owned an exact duplicate of the chair needed (left, above).  The chair was graciously made available to us, as was the Mission Style (right, above), from Haney’s Comfort Living in New Castle, PA.

By 4:30 PM of the day before the shoot, we’d commandeered enough of the lobby in set-ups that I felt badly for Packer-Thomas, our gracious accounting firm hosts, but they remained more interested than upset.

drawing

Kelin Bannon, model and assistant, who would be assisting me on the day of the shoot, had already been over in detail our schematic of the lighting set up.  We met at the studio early the morning of the shoot, loaded the gear into the Suburban and headed for the location.

Once we arrived and got everything arranged, we began testing, knowing that Attorney Hartman would arrive at or about 10:30 AM, and we would have a brief time with him before he would have to leave for his next appointment.  Therefore, all details were attended to before his arrival.  We had determined that the chair would need to be raised about 12-15 inches for the perspective needed, thus the plywood risers you see here.

chairtest

You may also note that there are some odds and ends books at the lower left, which we removed.  We debated over moving books into the blank shelf that remained, but decided that many of them were very old, and somewhat fragile.  Damaging a valuable law library wasn’t in our plans, so I decided I would correct that later in post processing.  Once we had made several tests, we previewed them on my Macintosh laptop for details.  We found a few changes and added a gobo to further darken the bookshelves.

chairtest2

When Mr. Hartman arrived, he brought with him several shirts as options for the suit we’d decided upon.  Since it is Dallas Hartman’s custom to where only dark suits, usually with a white shirt, the medium gray suit we had requested in order to separate him from the background had taken some convincing.  As recently as the night before, his personal assistant as not certain that he would be comfortable enough to trust us with this portion of his image.  Thankfully, he did, although the suit itself is actually a very neutral medium brown that almost looks gray.

First up was the white shirt, which most closely resembled the original plans.

Set D1

Cropped as planned, with the gaps in the bookshelf filled in post production, it looks like this…

Set D2
Once we’d shot quite a few of these, Mr. Hartman took off the jacket, shooting just in shirtsleeves for another dozen or so in the white shirt, which we agreed was too stark.  These were followed a jacket-less series in a blue shirt…

Set E2
…and then a series with the blue shirt and jacket.  The consensus was the blue shirt without jacket would be the final selection, due to body language, separation from the chair and background created by the shirt and general involvement and interest as communicated in his face.
Always fun, creating an image.

Why a Studio in New Wilmington?

…because I love this region.  I’ve lived in London, England, Springfield, IL., Dayton OH., Franklin, IN., and many other places.  All of them were home – some for years.  But after any long stay away from western Pennsylvania, I can feel my soul relax with a sigh upon my return.

This is where I started this studio, and despite the recent slow economy, the place I choose to remain.

Now, continuing with the theme of attachment  to the region…

I’ve said before that one of the surest ways to cease taking photographs for the pure creative enjoyment is to start a photography business.  In fact, over the years, it has been in recognition of this that I make an effort to create images that are pleasing to me personally.  If they appeal to others, wonderful.

One of the benefits of living in western Pennsylvania is it’s beauty.  That is especially true of Lawrence and Mercer counties, my home area.  Here, we have several thousand Old Order Amish with their well kept farms as well as the farms of the “English” (non-Amish) and the many small towns, most of which have deep ties as agricultural centers.  We also have Westminster, Thiel and Grove City Colleges as well as Slippery Rock and Youngstown State Universities.

These combinations yield a quaintness to New Wilmington, Mercer, Grove City, Slippery Rock, Stoneboro, Sandy Lake, Jackson Center and many other local towns that is really a throwback to late 19 and early 20th century America.  It’s a part of why I opened my studio here 25 years ago, and part of why I remain, despite having worked all over the world, even briefly living and working in Houston, TX.

The churches, towns, farms, and family run businesses that dot the countryside are the visual evidence that, in the largest sense, Man (and Woman) have been cultivating, shaping and honing this land for centuries.

The photo below is along a road named Covered Bridge Road, you’ll never guess why.  It was a beautiful fall Sunday, and I just wanted to get a few shots.

This next photo was on the plateau across Neshannock Creek from the farm above.  Several miles separate them physically, as well as the fact that one is an Amish farm, the one below is not.  The beauty is evident in both, however.

Then all too soon, across the valley, the sun set…

Dreaming

Wedding Gallery

Every wedding makes me think of the little girl in this photo.
I’ve mentioned this before, but perhaps it needs exploration.  When I meet with the brides who’ve selected Behm Photographics for their wedding, in the back of my mind there’s the knowledge that for many women, their subconscious has been imprinted as early as the girl in the accompanying image.
This particular little girl was trying to see over the pews, but was too short.  Her focus was rapt, so intent was she on what looked like a fairy castle bathed in light.  She could not tolerate only seeing part.  I was paying attention to the couple, but aware of this child trying so hard to see.  Suddenly, as I was watching the bridal couple through the viewfinder, I became aware that there was something in the aisle that hadn’t been before.  There she was, still as a stone…watching everything.  Her wise and patient mother leaned near, but allowed her daughter to stay until the end.
What has this child got to do with a young woman coming to Behm’s?  Part of my job is to come to an understanding of her internal wedding, that dream that commenced when she was this child, and began to know “ My wedding will be…”
